Weekend catch up

It seems like every weekend our days are completely filled up. But that's the way we like it. It doesn't seem like summer is almost over but sadly it is. We start school in 2 weeks. So we are going to enjoy all these jammed packed days:)

Saturday Zoe was invited to her friend's birthday party at the skating rink. And since Corey was working the boys went along with us. They all love skating and cake so it was a great time.

Posted by Picasa

Sunday night at church the group Lordsong performed a great concert. Then we all went to the Harrison's to celebrate Tracy and Summer L birthdays! The kids got to swim and eat cookie cake! They were pretty excited that they had cake twice over the weekend.

Monday is our pool day but we decided to do something different today. We headed to Barnet park and let them play in the fountains. Zoe brought a long her tea set for the girls to play with.Well the boys took that over really quick..lol. I think by the end the boys were saying they would like to have a Batman tea set. Um wonder if they have those?

After an eventful time getting signs for the upcoming consignment sale, we all headed to my house. Next thing we know all the girls start parading through the living room with Zoe's clothes on. They were all playing dress up and looked oh so cute!

I got such great response from doing this little cuties pictures. That I decided to start another blog just for my pictures:) If you would like to look you can click here.

What a week

I'm sure everyone is wondering where I have been this week. It has been one of the busiest weeks this summer. All of the kids participated in camp this week at church. Zoe went to Adventure Campout camp (I helped with that camp but a different class) and the boys had Sports camp. Then in the evenings they went to VBS at a local church. So we have been some busy bees..lol. They kids seem to have loved everything but I think it just wore me down. I had a stomach thing and now I have some kind of cold. But I just keep taking meds and keep on going..lol.

This the class I helped with.

Vaca Review

A lot of people thought we were crazy to go on this road trip:) Sometimes I thought we were too. But it was one of the best vacations we have ever taken! It was wonderful seeing all new things. It's nice to know that the kids (and us) don't always need a very expensive vacation. That they can enjoy just spending lots of time with mommy and daddy. We loved it so much that we are planning next years road trip...Yellowstone!
2 zoos
7 states
3 hotels
500 buffalo
3,500 miles
1,746 pictures
3 kids
2 parents =
The best road trip EVER!!!

Henry Doorly Zoo

On our last day of vacation we went to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha,NE. I have been wanting to visit this zoo forever! We have a zoo membership so we try to go to every zoo we can. This was the BEST zoo we have been too. It took us almost 7 hours to see everything there. So if you are ever in that area you need to check it out.

Our last day at Custer

Our last at Custer we decided to just sit back and relax. We were still tired from the water park the day before. Custer State Park also has a park ranger program and a lot of interactive programs. So we spent the day learning about the park and different animals. They finished their books and got a badge. Half way through the day it started raining and boy did it rain. We went back to the cabin and enjoyed some game time. We have loved spending the week here. It was really a family vacation. The kids said this was the best vacation ever even better than Disney:)

Posted by Picasa

We woke up really early on Thursday to drive to Omaha,NE. Along the way we stopped by a place called Carhenge. It is a remake of Stonehenge but made out of cars..lol.

More football playing at the rest stop

On Tuesday we went to Rushmore Water slides. It was a beautiful day and it was not crowded at all. We all had a blast on the slides. The kids didn't even want to leave 6 hours later!

This was on the way to the water park. If you look REALLY close you can see Mt Rushmore in the background.

Another one lane tunnel

This was the Iron Mountain Road and it had a lot of U turns. This is one of the pigtail turns.

When you came out of this tunnel you could see the presidents.

Fishing, Panning and Burros?

On Monday we stayed in the park and let the kids pick what they wanted to do. They wanted to fish and fishing is what they did!
{ OK if my kids seem to be wearing the same clothes in a lot of these post they are..lol. They wore their bathing suits a lot. And Zoe is in love with her blue cherry dress and I am not fighting with her about wearing it..lol!}

I left to go to laundry ( yes moms still have to work on vacation) and left Corey with my camera.Glad I did because Kain caught this trout all by himself:)

Then daddy caught this fish and Kain took his pic. It's a really good picture taken by my son!

Posted by Picasa

Zoe took the picture above and below.

Posted by Picasa

The kids got to pan for gold and get all wet. The park had different programs that you could participate in. They found a few jewels and fools gold but you are not allowed to removed anything from the park.

Posted by Picasa

Posted by Picasa

After we were through trying to strike it rich.We went and did a little swimming in that beautiful lake you saw on the other post. I think of lake water and say gross but this water was crystal clear.

Posted by Picasa

We grabbed some ice cream and asked wanted they (kids) wanted to do now. Guess what? More fishing! Corey was gonna get some good use out of his 1 day SD fishing licences that costs $20.

I was surprised that Noah knew how to bait his on hook.

Posted by Picasa

Posted by Picasa

While we were fishing a herd of mountains goats came out of no where. Kain had to run away because they were right beside him. And these goats were being crazy jumping all around and hitting each other.

Noah finally caught a fish and was VERY proud of it:)

Posted by Picasa

Zoe was upset because she didn't catch a fish. She didn't understand that you have to leave the pole in the water!

Posted by Picasa

Remember those mountain goats from a few many minutes ago? Well Corey was shutting our trunk and one came up on him. He jumped in the car and left his family(me and the kids) outside to fight the goats off...lol. That goat was after him though and I was laughing so hard...lol!

We finally saw the wild burros a.k.a. donkeys on the Wildlife Loop. They are the only animals you are allowed to feed.

Posted by Picasa

Posted by Picasa

There was one burro by himself and Noah wanted to give him some food. But he was not very social.

When we got back Corey cooked us some saugage dogs..yum yum!

Posted by PicasaZoe had been trying to catch a rabbit to bring home since we got here.

Then of course we had to have some s'mores!

Caves and Digs

Sunday morning we got up and headed out for some fun adventures. We saw these prairies dogs and antelope as we were leaving the park.

Wind Cave National Park

The kids and I with some buffalo in the background.

Posted by Picasa

We decided to go on a cave tour since we were in Wind Cave National Park. Kain and I were a little scared but once we got in we LOVED it! We walked over 300 steps down to get in the cave.We were 190 feet underground and we went 1/2 mile into the cave. The tour lasted a hour and a half. This cave doesn't look like other ones.It has box work instead of the pointy things(sorry can't remember the name). It was really beautiful.

Posted by Picasa

This is the box work I was talking about.

Posted by Picasa

Zoe even has to pose 190 feet underground

Posted by Picasa

We found a nice little park and had a picnic before we headed to our next stop. The boys have played football at every stop..lol. Notice Noah's tongue sticking out? He has been doing that a lot lately.

The kids have been waiting to go to The Mammoth Site since I told them about it. Years ago they were clearing land to build houses when the found some bones. Turns out it was mammoths and some other animals. Every summer scientists from around the world come to do more research. It was really neat to see. We signed the kids up for Jr.Paleontologists program where they were able to do a dig and identify the bones they found. They thought this was the best thing ever!

We saw some more buffalo and a coyote on the way home from our very busy day!

Exploring Custer State Park

Saturday morning we decided to stay inside the park and just explore. This is a huge area and going just a few miles takes a while. It is very hilly and a lot of sharp turns. But the drive was beautiful.

This is some of the buffalo on the Wildlife Loop Road. This is the road where most of the animals are suppose to be.

Pronghorn Antelopes are every where

We found this cave on the Needles Highway. It was very cool and they ran right inside it.I was afraid an animal was living in it...lol.

Posted by PicasaNoah did a little rock climbing

While Kain stayed on the ground looking in the creek

We drove through a few one lane tunnels carved out of the mountain

Posted by Picasa

This is why it's called the Needles Highway

Sylvan Lake was just beautiful

Posted by Picasa

We found this little passage on a trail at the lake.

He is King of the World

Posted by Picasa

Kain is getting to be a pretty good photographer.

We then rode to see Crazy Horse. It is still a work in progress.

I found a lot of good reviews for this little pie shop in Custer so we tried it out. YUMMY is all I can say! 2 thumbs up!

This was a Fort with some of the original homesteads on it.

We were told that the Elk are very shy and you rarely see them during the day. Corey was sitting on our porch and saw something way up on the mountain. He got my zoom lens and this is what he saw.

Not one but two Elk!

The Park Rangers had different things laid out for the kids to look at.

Posted by Picasa

We finished up our day at the park.

Posted by Picasa
You can definitely spend a week exploring the park. We had a great day just hanging out and doing what we wanted. It was nice just relaxing and not having to be anywhere. Corey barely wore his watch because we didn't need to know what time it was:

From one end of SD to the other

First off if you haven't got in on the giveaway yet click here to enter. You have til midnight tonight:)
***Warning there are a lot of pictures..lol!
We left Sioux Falls heading to Custer State Park 6 hours away. Along the way we stopped at some MUST sees...lol. So get ready to travel across the state of South Dakota!
First stop was The Corn Palace in Mitchell. The outside is made completely out of corn. They change the design every year.

We stopped at a rest area a couple of hours after the Corn Palace and found this awesome view! Wondering how I took our family picture? Take a guess.

Posted by Picasa

I have NEVER seen anything so beautiful. It almost didn't look real. This was taken from the car as we were traveling along.

This tee pee was at a gas station. The roads were all paved when you got off the interstate but they turned to gravel.

We were on the way to the Badlands when we ran up on the Prairie Ranch. Of course we had to stop. Guess what? You got to feed the prairie dogs! They were not in a cage or anything. This is their natural habitat. The kids were loving it. They scared me a little.Kind of reminds me of rats...lol.

Posted by Picasa

I have to say the Badlands just took our breathe away. Oh only our glorious God could make such a beautiful place. It was so hot there too. I thought I was in a desert. You have to watch out for prairie rattlesnakes so we were all being very cautious.

Now I have been told you can not go to SD and not stop at the world famous Wall Drug Store. It started many years ago as a small place and has grown into a huge tourist attraction. When it first started they thought of a way to draw people in. They put signs on the road saying "free ice water".Well it worked because everyone started stopping there.

Posted by Picasa

Our first buffalo burger. It tasted a little dry to me but Corey liked it. Wall Drug has anything and everything you could imagine. So we decided to eat lunch there too.

Posted by Picasa

Posted by Picasa

Finally after many hours we arrived in Custer State Park.We were not in the park 10 minutes and started seeing the wildlife. All animals have the right of way so you just gotta stop and wait for them to move.

mountain goats

( It is against the law to feed them so they are not looking for food. They keep licking the road..lol)

Posted by Picasa

Instead of tent camping ( they have mountain lions and it gets cold at night) we rented a camping cabin. The only thing in it is beds but we liked it.
